ISRAEL LOPEZ, BETTER KNOWN AS CACHAO STARTED HIS MUSICAL CAREER AT THE AGE OF EIGHT PLAYING BONGOS. BY THE TIME HE WAS THIRTEEN HE WAS ALREADY IN THE HAVANA SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA PLAYING BASS AND THERE HE REMAINED FOR THIRTY-ONE YEARS.
CACHAO WAS BORN IN HAVANA CUBA SEPTEMBER 14, 1918 AND COMES FROM A LONG LINE OF MUSICIANS. IN FACT, IT IS SAID THAT THERE ARE MORE THAN THIRTY-FIVE BASSISTS IN HIS FAMILY. BUT CACHAO IS MORE THAN JUST A GREAT BASS PLAYER. HE'S AN ARRANGER, COMPOSER AND BETWEEN HE AND HIS BROTHER, ORESTES LOPEZ HAD COMPOSED THOUSANDS OF DANZONES FOR ARCANO'S REPERTOIRE. IN ADDITION TO BASS, CACHAO ALSO PLAYS TRUMPET, TRES, PIANO AND ALL PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. HIS BROTHER TOO IS AN ACCOMPLISHED PIANIST AND PLAYS SEVERAL OTHER INSTRUMENTS AS WELL.
CACHAO'S MOTHER PLAYED PIANO, BASS AND GUITAR AND WAS PERHAPS HIS FIRST TEACHER. HIS GRANDFATHER, AURELIO LOPEZ DIRECTED THE HAVANA MUNICPAL ORCHESTRA WHEN IT WAS PROCLAIMED THE GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD.

CACHAO LEFT HAVANA IN THE LATE FIFTIES OR EARLY SIXTIES. SINCE LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES CACHAO HAS PLAYED AND RECORDED WITH TITO RODRIGUEZ, PAQUITO D'RIVERA, EDDIE AND CHARLIE PALMIERI, ROBERTO TORRES, HANSEL AND RAUL, MACHITO, JOSE FAJARDO, JOHNNY PACHECO, JUST TO NAME A FEW.
HE'S RECEIVED MANY GRAMMY AWARDS AND MANY MORE NOMINATIONS. IN MARCH OF 2003, CACHAO WAS HONORED WITH A STAR ON HOLLYWOOD'S WALK OF FAME.
